"Are We Free from Sex and Gender?"
Li Ang (李昂) has been a writer for more than 50 years. Her work, such as The Butcher’s Wife, has been translated into more than a dozen languages including Arabic, Catalan and Polish.
Li Ang was an active participant in the dissident movement and was a founding figure in Taiwanese feminism. Her works dissect themes drawn from contemporary taboo topics of gender, sexuality, and politics, earning her a reputation as a controversial writer.
In 2004, Li Ang was awarded Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture and Communication, the only female writer in Chinese language to receive this honour. In 2019, the Li Ang Museum was established by the National Chung Hsing University.
This talk is hosted by the Bedford Centre of Royal Holloway, University of London, in collaboration with Taiwan National Central Library's Centre for Chinese Studies and the Association for Taiwan Literature.
