Call for Papers—The 2026 North American Taiwan Studies Association Graduate Student and Emerging Scholar Essay Award

Award Description:
This award is designed to promote exceptional research by graduate students and early-career scholars in Taiwan Studies. Since its inception, NATSA has been dedicated to fostering a vibrant Taiwan Studies community in North America and connecting scholars across the Pacific. In this spirit, the 2026 NATSA Graduate Student and Emerging Scholar Essay Award welcomes submissions from both the humanities and the social sciences. One winner will be selected from each field, and the award recipients will work with designated academic mentors and the IJTS editors to prepare their manuscripts for publication in The International Journal of Taiwan Studies.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited graduate program, have earned a PhD within the past five years, or hold a non-tenure-track position (such as postdoctoral fellow, adjunct instructor, or visiting professor).
Submission:

There are two categories for entry: Art & Humanities and Social Sciences.

The article should be between 6,000 and 12,000 English words in length, including references and notes. Please follow IJTS’s Instructions for Authors carefully

Send your manuscript and a 2-page CV to secretary@na-tsa.org with the email subject line “Submitting GSES Essay Award.”

Upon submission, please indicate for which one of the two subject categories you wish your article to be considered.

Articles must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.

Submissions may have multiple authors; however, all authors must meet the eligibility requirements and agree to work collaboratively with the assigned mentor.

Entrants may only submit one article per category. All submissions must be received by the essay award committee member by 1/15/2026
Review Committee:
The Committee will consist of IJTS editors, members of the NATSA Board of Directors, and established scholars in Taiwan Studies. The review process will be conducted through a double-blind evaluation.
Award Decision and Implementation

Winners will be notified by email and announced in April 2026 on the NATSA website.

Before the winning essays are published in IJTS, their authors must work with faculty mentors designated by the award review committee, in consultation with the IJTS editors, to revise their essays in accordance with the journal’s developmental editing procedures and publication timeline.
