The Ruhr University Bochum Research Unit for Taiwanese Culture and Literature

at the Faculty of East Asian Studies seeks to fill the position of a Postdoc, 39,83 hours per week (m/f/d) starting on the earliest possible date.

The Research Unit for Taiwanese Culture and Literature is a platform designed for the scholarly exchange with Taiwan. It organises teaching and cultural events in relation to Taiwan and houses one of the largest libraries for research on the subjects of Taiwanese culture and literature in Europe. Its main focus includes linguistics, history, media, and political studies.

Start: at the earliest possible date

Scope of employment: full-time (39,83 hour per week)

Type of employment: temporary, until Jan 31, 2026.


Your tasks:

  • The future holder of the position will be working as a sub-project leader in the BMBF joint research project “Taiwan as a Pioneer – Local Innovations in the Dynamics of Global Megatrends” (LINK: https://www.uni-trier.de/en/universitaet/fachbereiche-faecher/fachbereich-ii/faecher/chinese-studies/translate-to-englisch-tap-taiwan-als-pionier)

  • The sub-project at the Ruhr University Bochum should be focused on the area of research on “education/ science/ transfer of knowledge as the engine of Modernity in Taiwan”

  • If possible, the colonial period under Japanese rule should be included

  • Further aspects of the project in cooperation with our partner universities Trier and Tübingen include, inter alia, establishing an original professional network, setting up a database, compiling a student handbook for China studies focusing on Taiwan, and supplying digital teaching modules

  • With this multidisciplinary approach, China studies focusing on Taiwan are to be strengthened institutionally and their visibility shall be increased in the German research landscape

Your profile:

  • An excellent doctorate in a related discipline (Sinology / Chinese Studies, Japanology / Japanese Studies, Historical Sciences) is required, optionally with experience in Taiwan studies or studies on colonialism under Japanese rule

  • The date of the doctorate should not be older than 5 years

  • Applicants should have first experiences in independent research after their doctorate and should be committed to team work

  • Good language skills in written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin), German, and English are necessary; language skills in Japanese are an advantage

  • Willingness for conduct research stays in the regions of research is required
