Fwd: Taiwan's Youth Movement and Politics since the 2012 Sunflower Movement

Date: Tuesday, 18th May, 2021

Time: 10:00am CET

Location: Online

"In this lecture, I will survey the causes and the outcomes of Taiwan's 2014 Sunflower Movement, which involved a student-led occupation of the national legislature. After that incident, Taiwan's youth activism proliferated and helped the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party to capture the national power in 2016. After the power turnover, youth protests still continued, particularly on the issues of same-sex marriage and labor rights. In particular, young voters' fear of being annexed by People's Republic of China, which was intensified by Hong Kong's anti-extradition protest in 2019, helped consolidate the landslide reelection victory for the Democratic Progressive Party in 2020."

Ming-sho Ho is a professor at the Department of Sociology, National Taiwan University. He published Challenging Beijing's Mandate from Heaven (2019) and Taiwan's Working Class Formation (2014).
